Root Canal Q & A

What is a root canal?

A root canal is a common dental treatment used to a save a tooth. Prior to the use of root canals, oftentimes damaged or diseased teeth were extracted. During a root canal treatment, Dr. Yang removes and replaces the tooth’s soft tissue known as pulp, where nerves and blood vessels are located.

A tooth’s pulp may become infected or damaged due to a variety of issues, including:

  • An abscess that forms around a root due to an infection
  • A broken, cracked, or chipped tooth
  • Multiple procedures on a tooth
  • A deep cavity or filling

How do I know I need a root canal?

Dr. Yang evaluates whether your particular dental issue can be fixed by performing a root canal. However, most people experience a mild to severe toothache, particularly when chewing or biting down.

Other common symptoms that may indicate the need for a root canal are:

  • Tooth sensitivity to cold or hot foods
  • Red or swollen gums near the tooth
  • A pimple-like bump on your gum
  • Discoloration of the tooth

What can I expect during a root canal treatment?

A root canal treatment typically takes place in one or two appointments. The overall goal of the root canal is to clean out the damaged or diseased pulp inside the tooth and to fill it with protective material. This way your tooth can be saved and you can resume normal activity, such as chewing, without pain. There are three basic steps:

Step 1

Dr. Yang numbs the area with a local anesthetic so you’re comfortable during the procedure.

Step 2

Dr. Yang makes a small hole in the affected tooth and removes the damaged pulp. She cleans the area and reshapes it, if necessary. Dr. Yang fills the space with artificial dental pulp, called gutta-percha, mixed with an adhesive, which serves to seal the root canal. She fills the original hole she made to begin the procedure with a temporary filling.

Step 3

Dr. Yang completes the root canal procedure by replacing the temporary filling with a permanent one or with a crown.
