Clear Braces Q & A

What are clear braces?

Clear braces are one of three main types of braces. The other two are traditional stainless steel and metal braces and ceramic braces.

Clear braces have become a popular orthodontic solution for adults and teens that don’t want to be bothered by the look and stigma of traditional metal braces. With clear braces, clear aligners are custom made to fit over your teeth, and can be removed when you eat and drink or brush and floss. Two popular brands are ClearCorrect and Invisalign®.

How do clear braces work?

After Dr. Yang establishes that you’re a good candidate for clear braces, she takes impressions of your teeth and develops a treatment plan. The rest of the process plays out in three main steps.

Step 1: Custom aligners are created

Dr. Yang sends data, including your dental impressions, to a laboratory that makes your aligners. About 24 sets of clear aligners are made for a 12-month treatment plan. When you get your aligners, you also receive instructions on when to switch to the next set. Dr. Yang recommends that you wear your aligners for 20-22 hours a day.

Step 2: Progress checkups

You come in to see Dr. Yang periodically, so that she can track your progress. Although the frequency of checkups varies from patient to patient, the average timeframe is every six weeks.

Step 3: Completion

Your treatment is complete in 12-18 months.* From here on, it’s important to make sure your teeth don’t move back into their original crooked positions, so Dr. Yang may recommend wearing a retainer at night to prevent movement of your teeth.

Can anyone get clear braces?

Clear braces are a treatment option for most adults and teens. Preteen patients whose teeth and jaw are still growing may not be well suited for clear braces, since the aligners are customized for a tight fit. After meeting you, performing an examination and learning more about your goals, Dr. Yang recommends the best orthodontic option for your individual situation.

Dr. Yang is specially trained to perform both ClearCorrect and Invisalign treatments. If you’re thinking about clear braces, call or click to book an appointment with Dr. Yang and her team.
