Dental Implants Q & A

What are dental implants?

Dental implants are permanent, custom-made artificial teeth that replace missing natural teeth. Dental implants are attached to titanium posts that are anchored into your jawbone. Since they’re made from material that mimics the look and color of natural teeth, dental implants have become a popular option for people who don’t want dentures or can’t wear them.

Who is a good candidate for dental implants?

Most adults are well-suited for dental implants, but they’re not recommended for growing children. To get implants, you must be in good overall health and have healthy gums and strong bones to support the implant. Adults suffering from diabetes and leukemia may not be good candidates due to the factor that these illnesses often slow down the healing process.

Fortunately, if you’ve lost your teeth a long time ago and now have insufficient bone to support an implant, Dr. Yang can still prepare the area in your jawbone to receive an implant. She performs a bone grafting procedure called a ridge augmentation to ensure there is adequate bone prior to placing your implant.

What is the process for getting a dental implant?

Once Dr. Yang does a thorough examination, including X-rays, and if she determines you’re a candidate for dental implants, the process begins.

Appointment 1

This first appointment will take about two hours depending on how many implants are required. Dr. Yang surgically places a titanium post into your jawbone, attaching a screw to the implant to block debris and tissue. She’ll cover the gum over the implant and leave in place to heal. During this time the implant will fuse to the bone.

Appointment 2

About six months later, Dr. Yang uncovers the implant and attaches an extension or post. A crown will be created for each post, which essentially replaces the missing tooth or teeth. Dr. Yang may do a combination of dental bridges and crowns depending on the number of teeth missing and the best solution for anchoring the dental implants.

Dr. Yang and her team have an expertise in placing dental implants. They have performed hundreds of dental implants over the past decade and take pride in planning, placing, and caring for their patients before, during, and after implant surgery.
